Gucci has always been one of the most well known and popular Italian brands in the fashion market. It once stood alongside brands such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Dior in terms of quality and consumership.

However over the last couple of years the popularity of Gucci has declined. Many saw it as a brand of the past and still a brand only producing products primarily for their aristocratic and very wealthy customers. (from left to right- Jackie Kennedy, Sophia Lorren, Liz Taylor wearing Gucci)

The decline in popularity for Gucci also came after a boom in the reproduction market (fake designer handbags). The classic GG monogram which was plastered all over the Gucci bags was once the hottest trend on the Gucci catwalks, as well as on the street and in magazines. However as people started to buy monogramed bags, shoes and clothes which were both originals and reproductions the monogram started to be branded as tacky and cheap (something that also occurred with the classic Burberry pattern). The GG monogram was no longer seen as something exclusive and luxury.

Every successful fashion house has something that makes it unique and distinguishable. Chanel has the classic CC monogram as well as the Classic Flap Bag, Hermes has the horse and carriage logo and Bottega Veneta has the weave leather signature style.

Like these three brands the GG monogram defined Gucci, however the reputation had been tarnished. Gucci was faced with a problem either scrap the monogram and risk Gucci products becoming indistinguishable, or continue using the monogram and ignore the bad connotations the monogram came with.

However Gucci has had a makeover under the new creative director Alessandro Michelle. He has brought Gucci into the 21st century, ditching the gowns that Gucci under Frida Giannini was famous for and created a brand that appeals to the younger generation.

Michelle has looked back into the archives of Gucci and reinvented classic pieces such as the Gucci loafer.

Gucci like Hermes has always been known for its prints, which were seen mainly on their scarves. Michelle has taken old Gucci prints using them on clothing as well as shoes and bags.

His love for colour and use of animal materials such as fur and leather has been a prominent reoccurrence on the Gucci catwalk. The latest Gucci show was the Autumn/Winter show which showed the use of colour blocking as well as monochrome outfits.

Fashion houses have recently been criticised for churning out unoriginal and boring clothing. Anna Wintour stated her disappointment at what she saw at New York Fashion week in February this year.... Gucci however stands out amongst the crowd.

Gucci has been a popular choice amongst celebrities ranging from Madonna to Beyonce to Lady Gaga and has brought the excitement back in dressing!
